What a random color is good for

Preschool and kindergarten teachers spin it for color hunts: the wheel says green, and the kids run to find three green things in the room. Parents use the same trick on rainy afternoons, or to decide which crayon a toddler colors the next picture with.

Older kids and adults have their own uses. A color picks the theme for a spirit day, the only color allowed in a drawing challenge, the team jersey in gym class, or the shirt you have to wear to the next family photo. Artists sometimes spin twice and paint with just those two colors.

The names stay simple so a five-year-old can read them along with you. If you need shades for design work, like teal, coral or mustard, type them into the list.

Playing a color game

  1. Look over the 16 colors and remove any that are hard to find in your room, like silver or gold.
  2. Spin, and give everyone a minute to find or draw something in that color.
  3. Turn on Remove each winner from the wheel right away in Settings if every color should come up only once.

Color spinner questions

Do the slices show the actual colors?

No. The slices follow the wheel's color palette, which you can change in Settings. Only the names are read, so a slice saying "Blue" might be painted orange. With little kids, that mismatch can even become part of the game.

Can I use it for Twister-style games?

Yes. Cut the list down to red, blue, yellow and green, then make a second wheel with "Left hand", "Right hand", "Left foot" and "Right foot". Spin both for each move.

Why aren't there more colors?

A wheel with 50 slices gets hard to read from the back of a classroom. Sixteen fit well on a projector. Add or delete colors freely if you need more or fewer.

Can I spin it on a phone?

Yes, tap the wheel to spin. It works in any modern phone browser without an app or a sign-up.
